Reality: Since the 1700s, we've lost 35% of our forests, 85% of our wetlands (which store more carbon) and abandoned passive solar design and vernacular architecture.
There's nothing about having an advanced industrial society that requires us to design a world to maximize electricity use and forget long established best practices which gave rise to interesting local cultural flavor in the form of buildings and practices which played well with that place in that time.
