Cory is right and wrong, the early internet is gone from sight, but it has been heavily optimised to make money(full stop).
And this is a line I observe, whatever will make me money, and does not involve crime or complicated "platform engagement" is something that I will partisipate in.....as it bridges the dificulties of rural living by allowing me to be in many places at once, while still physicaly bieng on the land.
What Mr Doctorow calls the enshitifcation has been manifesting as what I call the "devitilisation" of rural areas for a lot longer, and now with mobile cellular data becoming widespread, the internet is in fact providing an.economic anchor i to the world at large....not an easy or good anchor, but it is something, and with the ability to have critical supplys and parts delivered has changed the balance a bit, so...we will see.
