Ask HN: A basic income variant that pays people based on self-employment effort?

So even if they make no money, as long as they are making a genuine attempt at self-employment they would be given this basic income variant.

    I think just about any attempt at enforcement and "means testing" will itself cost more than the "savings" you'd have by not paying certain people - and that's before we start talking about false positives, false negatives, & people explicitly trying to game the system.

    How will this be enforced? How will you define this "genuine attempt" vs "non-genuine attempt"?

    You're going to need a massive government bureaucracy to monitor everyone for compliance (or some kind of massive AI surveillance system).

    There is an easier way, albeit counterintuitive - pay people for any provably performed, freely chosen "work".
