  Because they don't actually care about freedom or speech. Just their own speech.

  Threatening to or actually removing federal funding is one thing, but this is absolutely bizarre:

  > In a letter sent Thursday night, federal officials said the university must immediately place its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Department under “academic receivership for a minimum of five years.”

  The federal government has no business trying to claim control of an academic department in a private institution (nor in public but state-owned institutions).

  I don't understand why they are even trying to bail out Columbia. Cut off its funds and let the university either fund itself via its endowment or die.
