Ask HN: Finding a Programming Tutor

by whatevermom on 2/23/25, 10:31 AM with 4 comments

I am looking for a programming tutor for my girlfriend.

I found Codementor, but the cost is 80$/hour, which is definitely out of my budget.

Does anyone have a better idea ? I would be very grateful. Cheers

The best CS-for-beginners course is Harvard's CS50. (And you can take it for free online through EdX.) It's fun, but you learn a lot, and you get actual coding experience with coding tools.

There's a lot of free online support that comes with it - Reddit, plus virtual "section" videos, etc.

I can do it for one dollar per hour. We'll teach her how to do some scripting and browser extensions. And at the end she will be a basic coder. However, I will only teach if your girlfriend actually wants to learn to program.

Do you have a budget? I'm sure that would help narrow down the search for you.
