The Lost Futures of Computing: How We Got Boxed into the Desktop Metaphor

    I think this is an important topic. Not only are we saddled with limiting concept framing with "desktop", we end up with dumb things like deleting by dragging a document to a picture of a trash can. We're also saddled with "word processors", which most people seemed to think was a good idea when we passed around paper documents, but we don't do that much these days. The pagination and typesetting of, for example, Microsoft Word aren't much use when most people look at documents on their tiny li'l cell phone screens. The whole idea of "document" may be a hindrance.
