Are we currently going through an epistemic rupture similar to development of the theory of mind?

When I interact with software I recognize that "intelligence" in the software is trying to manipulate me. Hopefully that's with good intentions - e.g. an intuitive UI. More and more, the software creator's intentions are dubious or even openily hostile to my interests.

Does everyone with a smart phone possess that theory of software? Do most? Do you?
