Ask HN: How do you use HN?

by kaptain on 10/25/24, 1:24 AM with 4 comments

I typically use HN as a newsfeed: I browse the top submitted links, usually clicking on the discussion and browsing the comments. I rarely post; I view HN as a source of education and entertainment and less of an engaged discussion.

Sometimes I /will/ post or comment, but because I don't go back to my post or comment, I rarely see how people respond. Sometimes, when I'm bored I'll click through my submitted posts/comments and be surprised at how others responded to my submissions (usually it's a positive reaction ).

How do you use HN? How do you keep engaged in discussions? In my mind I just assume people either keep on hitting refresh or use some other third-party tool to help them see responses from others.

The “threads” link in the top nav lets you see your comments and the replies to them, without going through your comments in your profile (if that’s how you have been doing it).

    I use this website https://excuse-seven.vercel.app/

You don't need to click anything. After the latest 500 articles have loaded, the first order comments will load.

    You can mute words.

I watch the #hackernews-rss and #hn-firehose channels on the hackint IRC network, load up interesting posts that I see for reading/commenting/voting.
