Ask HN: Colocate or Buy VPS/VDS?

by pajeets on 10/15/24, 5:35 PM with 2 comments

I'm looking at purchasing a server with 512gb of ram and then colocating it but dont have any experience but the appeal is buying a lump sump initially to acquire the hardware specs I want and then colocating it at a fixed cost $50~100/month

If I were to buy the same spec it would cost $200~300/month forever

Does it make sense to buy my own server and colocate? What are the 1U rack fees now in 2024?

Are there any tips or gotchas for beginners like me?

When I shopped around for VPS/VDS I found that they were all sharing something between different clients whether its i/o or cores, which gave me an icky feeling as I need strong consistent throughput from cores for video stream mixing (im launching something similar to Twitch)

You might be looking for the wrong phrase. The V in VPS means virtual so it's usually shared with other hosting customers. Look for root servers or dedicated servers. If you launch a new project renting should be more attractive because you don't have paying customers yet (I assume). It's not easy to sell a used server, they loose value faster than cars.
