Engineers are not just builders

    Yeah but a product engineer as the title suggest it's not just software engineering, and a software engineer, in theory, can achieve greater depth of understanding in engineering than a product engineer because they're not saddled with product context.

    This expansion of the engineer role is very common now, and I think it's what causes a lot of bad software. Managers and product owners have somehow offloaded their responsibilities unto engineers and the worst part is that this is a double standard because it's not like everyone is learning to code. Only engineers get to manage teams and figure out business requirements, but managers and product owners don't learn to contribute, let alone understand the software.
