Study of people born during Ukraine's Holodomor - Soviet inflicted famine of '32 - '33 - confirms other studies showing increase of diabetes and obesity in later life.

I heard this on the Science podcast. First result in the linked search is Science's related article.

The study is a demographic-heavy study, taking advantage of Ukraine's project to reconstruct demographic records of the time, which were hidden or destroyed by the Soviets.

This particular study's control was Western Ukraine, where Russia had less influence and so was not much affected by the famine. According to the author's interview, anyway.
