Ask HN: Good examples of applications that just works

I'm just wondering, in this phase where AI is being applied to almost any software, where may I find some good examples of applications that just do their work? I'm talking about open source but also great paid products that are not "hyped".

What I'd like to have is a collection of application that may be useful for people lurking/visiting HN.

What I do not consider a good application:

- if you force your user through a subscription, without providing a good option (e.g. no only-saas-software), but if there's a self-hosted option/lifetime license you may still post.

- if you force AI or use the data for training LLM

- if you use dark patterns to force users to do an action

Beyond Compare just works (if we don't give it PDF).

By time saved, it is the best £50 I've spent on software.
