Ask HN: Why are captchas becoming so difficult?

by mouzogu on 4/2/24, 3:29 PM with 3 comments

you have these crimes against visual accessibility called captchas and arkose challenges which seem to become more bewilderingly esoteric and confoundingly incomprehensible with each day

sometimes it seems like google is f--king with me with their captchas, failing them or taking sooo long to load sections or giving captchas that are unpassable...

is this now a permanent feature of the web? ever increasingly complex captchas, isn't there some endgame to this?

They keep getting more difficult because computers keep becoming able to solve them.

When the computer solvers (the 'bots') become better than humans. Then only the bots will be able to get past them.

If a site uses a capcha I never use that site again.

Why would I visit a site that uses preventative measures to stop me from visiting that website.

Its a no brainer for me.

Why should I let the likes of google, and others, scan my browsing history to confirm I am human by checking if I have cookies from other sites. "No way Jose!".

For me its just another way to circumvent our privacy for our own protection.
