In the list of prereqs to making remote work, this is the first and maybe only important bit - "Is non-toxic and has an environment in which its participants are reasonably happy or at least not unhappy."
I think a large % of "remote didn't work for us" stories are shops that don't meet this criteria. My wife and I have both moved jobs during COVID and how much remote works in a healthy team/shop varies drastically from how it works somewhere that is toxic to start with.
If people are nervous at all about the future of the company/team/their standing within it, the anxiety can build tremendously when remote.
