    > Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, wanted to pursue a self-driving car, which members of the software team said could be done.

No one seems to realize how fantastically difficult self-driving is until they are deep into it. Apple, Cruise, and Tesla all seem to have made this mistake.

It's a shame that Apple won't be dumping its substantial resources into self-driving, because we'd all be better off if there were a viable competitor to Waymo (who now seems uncatchable).

the other perspective: apple, a first-in-class second-adopter, has surveyed the field of self driving cars and concluded that it's not worth it.

i've long been very suspicious of L5 being more or less impossible, though, so perhaps i'm just seeing signal where it's not there.
