I read in a great blog post[0] that many single letter .org, .net, and .co domains are unused and available for purchase. How come no one is using them? I would imagine big companies/products would jump on them (e.g. x.com) considering how easy they are to remember. How come so few are actually being used?

Are people squatting on these domains, making them exorbitantly expensive? I could understand if IANA didn't want people to purchase single-letter domains to avoid scams (e.g. owner of e.com can scam people with googl.e.com). But so many of these domains are registered and available to purchase. Any guesses on the reason?
