    what is it these days with people not setting up their own VPNs and instead use external providers like tailscale?

    A solution like this would be perfect for me. The problem is I know enough about networks to set this up but not enough to be sure that it would ever be secure!

    The harddisks were too loud? So he wants to turn it off, when not in use?

    The harddisks should be spinning down when not in use. If they're not spinning down, that's the problem he should go after.

    Plus, if they're actually loud, then he has crappy mounts and a crappier case.
