Ask HN: Best bang for the buck router setup for apartment

by realPtolemy on 12/3/23, 10:25 AM with 1 comments

I’m looking to buy a new router and need some help.

I live in a ~60 square meter apartment which has quite thick walls, longer distances between each room and of course a neighbor in each direction.

Which router setup do you, readers of HN, recommend me to look into? What should I purchase that provides best bang for the buck coverage speed and reliability?

Separate your router from your APs. ER605 is about 60 USD. Handles multiple uplinks as well. If you're not interested in the nuts and bolts of networking, get an Omada class AP from TP-Link and use the Omada software to configure everything.

For planning, get a 'wifi analyzer' type app on your phone. Are 2.4GHz channels jam packed? If so, 5GHz might be a better option to optimize for, if you don't have legacy 2.4-only devices.
