Ask HN: What is the purpose of status page if it is wrong – OpenAI

by LLcolD on 11/9/23, 11:06 AM with 3 comments

According to numerous messages on Twitter and on my own experience something is still down when it comes to OpenAI (ChatGPT). And yet their status page says that all is fine.

https://status.openai.com

Why is that so?

It usually takes around 30 minutes (median around 15) for any outage or issue to propagate to a status page.

Depending on OpenAI's implementation, they may issue incident reports manually, or use their own reporting and internal API's to update. It's important for this data to be accurate, and often they go through manual confirmation process instead of just posting whatever the API says is "true"

Circumstances seem to have changed somewhat. I just hit the status page and it’s showing issues since last night :

Update - We are dealing with periodic outages due to an abnormal traffic pattern reflective of a DDoS attack. We are continuing work to mitigate this. Nov 08, 2023 - 19:49 PS

An org's learning curve. First time it happened on this scale. They will probably do a thorough post-mortem to make sure processes are improved next time.

Also, I hope they look at Twitter/X.
