No, you're not going to find the latest python distribution, but there's a lot of stuff on the App Store you're not going to find in apt-get as well...
I see there's also the usual "this is different, and not the way I'm used to". Well, yes, it's a different OS. Things will be different. It's a bit like going to the US and hearing someone talking (loudly, in public no less) about their fanny-pack. It's going to be a bit jarring at first...
I use Mac and Linux day-in, day-out. They're both excellent OS's. The reason I prefer OSX is the wealth and breadth of applications that integrate nicely into the ecosystem, and I find that hard to match under Linux, but Linux works better as a server-OS for me. Just choose the tool that matches how you work, for the task you have in mind, at least that's what I do.
