In PG's 'Do things that don't scale' essay he talks about manual start ups 'being' the software in the early stages before automating the process once you have a deep knowlege of the process and enough demand. He gives the example of stripe manually adding users to 'instant' merchant accounts. I was wondering if anyone had any other good examples to share?

Any kind of company that starts out as a managed service and then moves to a self-serve platform/SaaS (my company right now)

groupon used word press in the beginning to create it's deals pages.
