Ask HN: How can we make AI available to everyone?

by stagas on 5/9/23, 1:10 PM with 5 comments

We can't allow companies or governments to control access to AI as it becomes ubiquitous. Whatever reason you might consider, the fact is that this technology provides major advantages to those who have access to it versus those who don't.

What steps do we need to take to make a GPT level AI highly available to everybody?

    1. Who is "we"?

    2. Locally-runnable models remove the ability of corps to control access to the technology. So facilitating that might help. Good UX would help non-techies.

    3. The only real checks on governments are legal and electoral, but I'm not sure how that helps. Governments are going to be interested in it for military purposes and for economic competition, but if they see it being used by individuals for purposes that they don't like (terrorism, misinformation, hacking, creating illegal "content", etc.) then they may try to restrict possession (as with cryptography in the 80s/90s). So have a plan for that.

Low complexity open source models and training tools that have as few dependencies as possible. Imo all of the current python solutions are way to fragile to be able to survive government attempts at control.

In the worst case scenario, it may also be worth knowing what, if any, cloud providers exist that are resilient to censorship or coercion, ie that currently host things that have been subject to protests or influence to be taken down.

In contrast why can we allow companies and governments to control access to smart phones and related services? Why should XXX technology be treated differently?

Asking this without necessarily taking sides pro nor contra.
