Why do HN users post retro articles?

I'm really not sure why HN users post retro articles like just for example, what Bill Gates thought about iTunes licensing.

This history is so well known, just like the antitrust case where there is video recorded testimony from both parties.

Do HN readers have short memories or are they just finding detritus on the web that they think is clever?

It's a little baffling and sort of self aggrandizing.

People just share what they find interesting and not everyone here was paying attention when Bill Gates weighed in on iTunes licensing, some were to young and some just didn't care. Your post comes across as self aggrandizing but mostly because you brought up self aggrandizing, I probably would not have considered it if you did not mention it.

Historical material is often intellectually interesting and that's more than enough to make on topic for Hacker News. See https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.

Sometimes detritus is even more interesting than important things! keep in mind that we're optimizing this site for nothing more serious than idle curiosity. Whimsy is part of that.
