Ask HN: New ad-blocker message on Facebook– are my friends being held hostage?

by thrusong on 10/12/22, 10:06 PM with 3 comments

Today I noticed an alert message from Facebook in my News Feed about how my ad-blocker is blocking posts from my friends.

I've attached a link to an image below.

Facebook works super poorly in Firefox these days so this probably is a legit addition, but the box also extends out the right side of the column and breaks the grid.

The text reads:

Your ad blocker is blocking posts from friends

Certain ad blockers can stop websites from working properly. You can pause your ad blocker on Facebook to allow the posts to load.

There's a blue button which says "Fix now" and it just walks you through how to do it with another message:

How to stop your ad blocker on Facebook

Click the ad blocker icon on your browser. From the drop-down menu, turn it off or select the option to not run it on pages for this domain. It will still run as usual on other websites.

Is Facebook actually withholding posts from my friends? Is it just a hostile black mail tactic they're playing with me?

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Facebook started wrapping a random 10% of your friends' posts in <div class="bannerAd"> or something like it for the sole purpose of making your experience worse and being able to truthfully say this.

I bet FB has noticed that 1) people want to see more posts from the folks they follow, not brands, and 2) lots of people are using adblockers.

More a scare tactic than anything else.

Let's just all keep on pressing that "don't have an ADblocker? Report an issue" link on the bottom of the first screenshot
