The word “electric” is redundant here. If there’s one thing the last few months have shown is that no country can be overly dependent on a single source of energy. EVs allow cars to be powered by whatever source of energy is available and can be converted to electricity.
Whereas ICE cars leave your nation beholden to whoever controls petroleum, which coincidentally or not, also happen to be amongst the shittiest countries in the world.
EVs are a very clear national security issue. And any car maker without focusing on EVs is gonna not exist a decade from now.
(I’m using EV as a stand in for a variety of potential technologies, such as hydrogen or something we haven’t seen yet…the point is that it needs to be an intermediary source of energy that can be created from a variety of sources. Currently EVs are the only one of those technologies that have taken off to any extent so it’s the most likely contender).

It is also a really tone deaf signal, right after Blume was involved with a political scandal where he claimed to have had a major role in getting e-fuels on the political agenda of the current coalition government. https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/e-fuels-lindner-porsche-103... [German]
