I realize optical drives slowly went out of existence as USB flash drives become larger, faster, cheaper.
It was still around for some time, and I would run into them every once in a while.
But today I realized it has been about 5 years since I saw a CD drive on a laptop.
Anyone else?

(looks down) A second ago. Granted, it's from 2015, but still does what I need it to.
All the desktops in my house have internal DVD/Bluray drives, and I still don't feel right buying a desktop case without 5 inch bays. I still ask myself why would a desktop not have a CD drive? Since I grew up in the 90s, I guess its habits are too hard for me to let go.

I bought one about 2 years ago for my wife with a dvd drive, it was a feature she wanted. It's a brand new HP/Dell touchscreen laptop. It probably depends on the intended use of that laptop. Hers is focused on media use so it includes the cd/dvd drive as a way to watch movies. My 6+ year old gaming laptop does not include one.

I bought one with a bluray drive in 2011 (still in occasional use), and that's my most recent laptop wiht an optical drive. I think my wife's from around that time was already lacked one. I've got that laptop, my desktop, and an external USB DVD drive for my optical needs,

Right now. On my desk. It is an old MacBook Pro, but still in regular use.

That's a very good question. I know the last time I owned a laptop with a CD or even a DVD drive was more than a decade ago (!)

The one I had up to 2019 had one. But I replaced the drive with a caddy containing an hdd because I’ve never used it
