Young viewers prefer TV subtitles, research suggests

    I'm quite surprised by this, but only because the dozen or so people I spend time with aged between 18 and 25 don't use subtitles/captioning. Hardly a representative sample, obviously. But I wondered what the sample size was for this study carried out by a captioning charity.

    I therefore checked stagetext.org for info, and there's a news item published today [1] titled, Hidden Hard of Hearing Community Revealed by Lockdown Captioning. It has a note saying: Sapio research interviewed 2,003 people in October 2021 with the results weighted to be representative of the GB general population. Two-thirds (67%) of the population do not describe themselves as deaf, deafened or hard of hearing.

    I'm intrigued. Perhaps I'll learn more soon, given that this is, apparently, Captioning Awareness Week [2].

    This is certainly something my kids like to do. They aren't in the target age range for the study though.

    My young one likes them. Her Nana need them sometimes and she is learning to read.
