Decline of Empire Parallels Between the US and Rome

Tired of seeing Rome pulled out as an example for everything. Lazy thinking. Similar to how the only example of a ‘bad’ leader is Hitler.

I’m sure, in the 2000 years since Rome, that there is probably another political system more suitable to use as a comparison to the US.

The truth is, the US has nothing in common with Ancient Rome. Not it’s religion, view of civics, concept of citizenship, law, property rights, economy, nor ideals.

In fact, the two cultures are so dissimilar, that one could just as well hold up the Incan or Mayan empires as valid (or, I should say, equally invalid) comparators.

Just because the Romans left a bunch of cool statues and buildings laying around that were copied by uncreative city planners and architects, does not mean the US has any particular similarity to Rome.

    Just my opinion.
