    Heavy elements have all sorts of interesting properties thanks to having so many electrons.

    For instance Thorium compounds are used for the mantles of gas lights because the are a "black body" for visible light but not so emissive of infrared.

    There are also uranium compounds that are ferromagnetic and superconducting at the same time, something which isn't supposed to be possible, but it is.
