- Deep work means those activities performed in a state of near distraction-free concentration that pushes your cognitive capabilities to their limit. This creates new value, improves your skill, and is often hard to replicate.
- In contrast to deep work is Shallow work, which means tasks that do not create much new value and are easy to replicate, often being performed while one is distracted.
- A distraction free work session allows you to learn a new skill faster and leverage your current skills to produce more valuable work. This enables you to create more quality work by focusing on activities that matter.
- Newport calls deep work, “the superpower of the 21st century.”
The Deep Work Hypothesis:
- The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a result, the few who manage to cultivate this skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive.
How To Deep Work:
1. Create routines. Habits take time and effort to stick. By creating a routine, you’re able to ritualise your deep work.
2. Eliminate distractions. You’ll be able to reap the full benefit of your deep work sessions.
3. Focus on the widely important. These are a small set of goals that maximise your deep work efforts.
4. Taking time off from work helps your mind to recharge and work better during deep work.
5. You should schedule blocks of time when the internet is allowed. The internet is full of distractions which can get in the way of deep work.
6. Commit yourself to a hard deadline. This artificial constraint will motivate you to deep work.
7. You need to meditate to sharpen your concentration skills and help you resist distractions.

9. Use the Pareto Principle (80/20 rule): Identify the 20% of activities that generate the 80% of your results. Then double down on those activities.
10. Assign blocks of time for specific activities. By deciding in advance what you’re going to do every workday, you’re able to plan out your day in a thoughtful manner, yet remaining flexible.
