  Pre-Google Reader, nearly all RSS readers were desktop apps with no synchronisation. Then Google Reader launched, was free, fast, available anywhere, was always up to date with how far you’d read, and came from a reputable household name.

  After Google Reader launched, other companies built basically the same thing, and some of them flourished after Google Reader was shut down. But none of them have met all of the above points.
