Ask HN: To Open Source or Not to Open Source

I have spent the last year and a half working on a GPU accelerated image compression codec that smokes all existing commercial CPU codecs by a factor of 3x or more (depending on CPU and GPU(s) ). An advisor suggested to me that in order to gain market share, I could open source my work under a dual commercial/GPL license. Because of the high performance, this would truly disrupt the entire market around this particular kind of compression. I am worried that open sourcing will simply allow other companies to "borrow" my ideas and I will not be able to monetize my work. What sayest thou, O Hacker News ? Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks!
