Ask HN: Does anybody else have trouble finding Rails devs in the midwest?

A couple years ago, I decided to switch the stack at my workplace from PHP to Rails. I haven't looked back, and neither have any of the devs that learned Rails with me. There were plenty of resources online, huge communities, and it just seemed so widely used.

Fast forward to 2015... I'm looking to grow the team with 2-3 more devs, and after 4 months of searching, I'm just coming up dry. I've reached out to a local Ruby group in Detroit, posted on Craigslist, posted on Stack Overflow, tried networking... I even went so far as to get in touch with a handful of recruiters. Two of them laughed and said something along the lines of "that's too west-coast for Michigan". So far I've only gotten a single interview.

Is my perception of the distribution of Ruby developers really that skewed? Is Michigan just a really terrible place for them because there are so many huge companies (like the Auto manufacturers) that employ huge numbers of .NET developers? I can't imagine that the job description is so terrible that nobody wants to check it out (don't want to post it in case it's seen as advertising or something...)

Has anyone else in the mid-west had trouble finding full-time developers? Any advice?
